The water flowed and dishes sparkled at the Hippie Kitchen on Saturday, May 31, when longtime house guest Arnal Kennedy returned to scrubbing pots after nearly a year sidelined with a hernia.
Arnal moved into the LACW in 2002 and has been the full-time dishwasher since then. After his injury in August 2013, Arnal was eager to get back to work but had to wait until April for his hernia surgery at Los Angeles County Hospital.
“I feel good,” Arnal said while scrubbing pots on Saturday.
No one is more thankful than those of us who filled in as dishwasher in Arnal’s absence. Mental meltdowns by us dishwashers due to volume in the homestretch of our shift became commonplace. Arnal, who can sing a Stevie Wonder song while handling the Thursday crush of dirty dishes, was welcomed back warmly by both volunteers and guests eating noodles, burgers, and salad at the Hippie Kitchen.
Again, a big WELCOME BACK, Arnal!
