Catholic Worker Street Serving

Filed under: News Items — Clare @ 6:36 pm

For more than 40 years we have been serving food to the homeless out of our van in the streets of Skid Row.
Last month, the LAPD told us to stop. And if we don’t stop, they will confiscate our pots and utensils and vehicle.
The LAPD has been shutting down food giveaways in Skid Row since last summer, citing minor health department code violations, including that mixing sugar with coffee constitutes “preparing” food and is thus outlawed on city sidewalks.
The LAPD’s shutting down other food lines and threatening to shut us down is simply the latest method by which the city is making life tougher for the poor downtown in an effort to drive them away.
Well, we aren’t about to stop serving oatmeal and coffee at the Fourth Street Bridge twice a week. Our friends on the street enjoy the hot meal too much.
We will have a full story on the situation in the next issue of the Catholic Agitator, but we wanted everyone to be aware of the important issue we are facing at the moment.
